Ferragudo Algarve, Portugal – How to spend a day here

The charming village of Ferragudo is nestled on the stunning coastline of the Algarve in Portugal, just across the city of Portimao. Whether you’re a traveler seeking adventure, someone buying property in this picturesque region, or considering moving to the Algarve, spending a day in Ferragudo is an absolute must.

Ferragudo is one of my favorite towns to go on a weekend, just to sit in the main square, having lunch and lazing about.

But if you are for the first time in this town, this is how you can spend the perfect day here.

If you prefer video, watch our video from Ferragudo (above).

Exploring the Village

Start your day by strolling through the narrow cobblestone streets of Ferragudo. As you wander, you’ll be captivated by the traditional whitewashed houses. Don’t just stop expiring the few lower streets of the town, go up hill to all the streets, find the church and go inside.

Take a moment (as the town is quite hilly) to stop and admire the beautiful views of the Arade River and Portimão across the water. Ferragudo’s charm lies in its simplicity. It’s like stepping into a postcard-perfect Portuguese village where time stands still.”

Take a break in the main square

Immerse yourself in the local atmosphere by visiting the village square, Largo Rainha Dona Leonor. Here, you can relax at one of the cozy cafes and enjoy a cup of aromatic Portuguese coffee while observing daily life unfold before your eyes

Here I like to try the sweets while indulging on an aperitif – like Negroni or Margarita. If you want to try something Portuguese, try a gingina cocktail. So what it’s before noon? It’s Portugal!

Discover Ferragudo Castle

Ferragudo is home to the picturesque Fort of São João do Arade, also known as Ferragudo Castle. Make your way up to this historic fortress, perched on a hill overlooking the village and the river. The panoramic views from the top are simply mesmerizing.

Feel like a knight or a princess as you explore the castle grounds and imagine what life was like centuries ago. Don’t forget your camera – the photo opportunities are endless!

Unwind on Ferragudo Beaches

No visit to Ferragudo is complete without indulging in its pristine beaches. Grab your towel and sunscreen and head to Praia Grande or Praia da Angrinha – two of Ferragudo’s most beautiful sandy stretches.

For a more secluded experience, venture over to Praia dos Caneiros. This hidden gem offers breathtaking cliffs and rock formations that create intimate coves perfect for relaxation and tranquility.

Savor Local Gastronomy

It’s time to break for lunch, satisfy your taste buds with the mouthwatering flavors of Ferragudo’s culinary scene. The village has numerous restaurants and taverns where you can sample traditional Portuguese dishes, fresh seafood, and regional delicacies.

Ferragudo is famous for offering you fresh, just caught catch of the day! You can watch the fishermans unload the fish from the boats and than just have a seat at the restaurants near the water and see how the fish is cooked in front of you.

Sunset at Praia da Rocha

As the day winds down, take a short boat ride to Praia da Rocha in Portimão. This renowned beach offers stunning cliffs, golden sands, and an array of beach bars where you can enjoy a refreshing drink as you marvel at the vibrant colors of the sunset. The sunset here is magical!

What now?

After a day spent here, you will want for sure to move here! Because you have noticed by now, the people around the town, a perfect blend of expats and locals. The atmosphere in this town is simply unique and magical, and the town is perfectly placed, just across a major town, like Portimao.

You can live in a perfectly secluded Portuguese dream and when you crave some action hop on a boat and in 5 minutes you are in a major town.

Just wait and see, by the end of the day here, you will be looking at the property ads!
